Indigenous Knowledge in Music

Root Afrika Music is a non –profit and non-governmental organization based in Lusaka, Zambia. Our aim is to ensure continuity and innovation in performing art through creation, performance and appreciation of exceptional works to enrich the lives of individuals and benefits communities throughout Southern Africa.

Root Afrika Music will ensure continued creative vibrancy in the African folk music community, attracting new audiences and engaging new participants.

Our Vision

A world in which indigenous instruments and sounds have a recognized place in the modern cultural and musical landscape, musicians are empowered to create and promote their own music.

Our Mission

To promote and preserve the contributions of indigenous African music and instruments, while acknowledging, respecting, to promote the ability of the creators of indigenous music to earn a sustainable living from their creative efforts and appreciating the musicians themselves.

Our Objectives

  • Promoting and working with and for musicians – regardless of age, ethnic origin, physical ability, gender, spiritual, religious beliefs or political affiliations – who create indigenous music.
  • Developing a permanent space for musicians to meet, practice, collaborate on projects, and share ideas.
  • Developing and promoting musicians from outside the most populous areas of Africa and those who lack public or community recognition for their skills and talents.
  • Facilitating exchange opportunities and network development between African and international cultural practitioners.
  • Generating positive media attention for indigenous musicians.
  • Organizing meetings and events with and for creators of indigenous music.
  • Developing partnerships with similar organizations to promote South- and pan-African collaborative musical endeavors.
  • Raising funds and receiving contributions where appropriate to finance the above stated objectives.
